What was in that apple?
Have you wondered why the body of Christ is so quiet on important social matters? Why the church isn't speaking up? Why she isn't actively working for change?
Maybe we should take another look at that apple!
In the early 1960s a theological movement arose in America which became known as 'the death of God'. It's rise led to that famous Time Magazine headline of 1966, "God is dead!"
Around the same time a new teaching started to infiltrate the church. It was catapulted into the minds of Christians through a young musician, Larry Norman, who wrote the infamous song, "I wish we'd all been ready".
The song, and new theology behind it, became the basis of The Left Behind series of books by Tim La Haye and Jerry B Jenkins, which were later immortalised in film, the last of which was released in 2014.
Sixty years of poison!
A whole generation of Christians was taught, though songs, visual media and the new 'end-time' theology, to actually believe Satan had replaced God in all the ways that matter.
This new end-time theology showed God as impotent, far away, and unable to stop the more powerful Satan from doing whatever he wanted to the world. In effect, God was dead!
Worse, 'evil' became 'God's will'!
Fighting Satan and the evil he brings, suddenly became a sin. When asked to stand up and fight evil, Christians began to retreat in horror at the thought of opposing God's will, believing that by fighting evil they were going against God's plan, stated in his word.
For in the last days...men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, without love of good, traitorous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. (2Tim.3:1-5)
The above Scripture was written as a description, not a recipe. It was a list of behaviours which Christians in Paul's day were supposed to identify as evil and personally avoid.
Nevertheless, in recent years this Scripture has been promoted as a picture of the kind of Godless society which will appear in the last days of the world.
Because of that distorted teaching, many Christians now use it as an excuse to do nothing about the evil flourishing all around them.
False 'end times' or ‘last days’ teaching is greatly responsible for the evil we see in society now. It’s the reason many Christians have done nothing to stop evil from growing. This deadly doctrine needs to be torn down and Christians need to rise up.
These few Scriptures show why 'last days' / 'end time' teaching is false doctrine.
To start with, the last days began with Christ! There have only ever been the former days and the latter days, the past days and the last days, the Old Covenant and the New Covenant.
In the past, God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he created the universe. (Heb.1:1-2)
He was chosen before the creation of the world but was revealed in these last times for your sake. (1 Ptr.1:20)
This is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: 'In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people; your sons and daughters will prophesy... even on my menservants and maidservants I will pour out my Spirit in those days.' (Acts 2:16-18)
Christ defeated Satan at Calvary. He took away his right to rule to rule the world and became King of Kings and Lord of Lords – ruler over all the kings of the earth, forever:
Grace and peace to you from him who was and is to come, and from the seven spirits before his throne, and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead and the ruler over the kings of the earth. (Rev.1:4-5)
Having disarmed the rulers and authorities, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross. (Col.2:15)
The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Messiah, and he will reign for ever and ever. (Rev.11:15)
The subtle denial of truth!
The true Bible-based Gospel:
Jesus ushered in the last days (Heb.1:1-2).
Jesus is God's named and appointed last days ruler over all the kings of the earth (Rev.1:15).
Jesus has overcome tribulation (Jn.16:33).
Jesus has commissioned his followers to go into the world and preach the Gospel (Matt.28:18-20).
Jesus will be looking for those who are awake and doing his work (Mk.13:36) when he returns on the last day (Jn.6:40).
The fake 'end-time' Gospel:
The last days will begin sometime in the near future. (No Scripture)
At that time, Satan will rule the nations through his fictitious human Antichrist world leader. (No Scripture)
Tribulation will be unbearable. (No Scripture)
Since the Gospel has already been preached to all nations, there is nothing for Christians to do but wait to be raptured. (No Scripture)
Though Satan will turn the world into a living hell, (No Scripture) a 'pre' last day rapture will save everyone from Satan's evil. (No Scripture)
If we, or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be under a divine curse.(Gal.1:8)
The false, but very convincing, 'end-time' theology is the kind of 'other gospel' Paul was warning about. Nevertheless, over time many Christians began to believe fighting futuristic 'last days' evil, would be pointless. It was prophesied, wasn't it? Opposing it would be like opposing God's will, better to just wait for Christ to return.
So Christians stopped fighting! And evil kept growing!
The church fell asleep to the sound of many false prophets and deceivers smoothly claiming Christ had sent them, when he had not, and filling their heads with plausible lies that, in effect, paralysed their walk and left them unable to do the clearly stated will of God. Yet Christ warned us they would come:
Many false prophets will arise and mislead many. Because of the multiplication of wickedness, the love of most (for God) will grow cold. But those who endure to the end will be saved. And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come. (Matt.24:13)
The bold preaching of the Gospel will hasten Christ's return!
The false 'end-time' teaching which encourages everyone to endure the evil they see while they wait for Christ to come and rapture them away, is now preventing God's people from doing the only thing which will hasten Christ's return.
Christ himself said he would come back only after the church had boldly preached the Gospel in all nations. Is that happening in our nation? No! In other western nations? No!
That is the will of God! That is role of the church! Yet, it's not happening!
It's a sad fact that this nation, Australia, is filled with Christians who won't speak up on political issues - won't publicly stand up for righteousness! The evil in this nation keeps growing and taking root, because Christians don't boldly lobby for Godly Kingdom principles to be upheld in our nation.
Christians make up nearly sixty percent of our population. We should not have a problem with abortion, euthanasia or transgender education in our schools. But we do! Why? Because Christians believe the lie that evil has to happen. No, it doesn't!
Evil is what we need to fight!
We are called to be a light shining in dark places. But what happens if we hide our light? Darkness rules! We are called to be salt, the flavour that makes food palatable. But what happens if we lose our flavour? We become useless to the kingdom of God.
You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its savor, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men.
You are the light of the world. People do not light a lamp and put it under a basket. Instead, they set it on a lampstand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. (Matt.5:14-16)
Christianity is not a club!
We don't join it like the footy club and turn up to a game now and then. Christianity is a life long commitment to Christ. It is a lifestyle! Christians can never be Christians in name only!
If we are not actively doing the will of God, standing against evil, being the salt, shining his light to the world, then we are asleep. We have swallowed a lie and we are deceived.
If you don't like what is happening in our nation, then stand up. Let your light shine! Speak up for the Gospel and the Kingdom of God.
We must take action!
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. (Rom.12:2)
Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.(Eph.6:11)
Christians all around the world need to shake off complacency and start publicly standing up for righteousness. If we don't, who will?
This is our job! This is how we are called to serve our King!
The weapons of our war against sin are not like the weapons of the world. They have extra power! A letter in the world has merit, but a letter written with the word and will of God has added power to tear down strongholds of evil.
Write letters to politicians. Sign petitions. Seek out Christian groups who are bringing change. Join political lobbies. Get involved in marches. Put your name on mailing lists. Get involved. The world won't change itself. WE have to change it!
The weapons of our warfare are not the weapons of the world. Instead, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We tear down arguments and every presumption set up against the knowledge of God; and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. (1Cor.10:4-5)
Wake up, oh loved of God, you have work to do!
