The Beast! Let's get back to Scripture...

In Scripture, when God reveals this beast, his description is written as a progression of a previous thought for it begins with the expression, and I saw

When we trace the ‘and’ back to its original statement (below), what we see is the reason for the beast’s existence.

The dragon (Satan) went off to make war...on those who keep the Commandments of God and bear testimony to Jesus...And the dragon stood on the shore of the sea...And I saw a beast rising...(Rev.12:17-13:1)

The Apostle John is first told Satan’s warfare will be against two things only; those who keep the Commandments of God and against those who bear testimony to Jesus. Then he is immediately given a visual picture of how that warfare will be carried out.

  • It’s no mistake the beast has ten ‘horns’, for Satan’s warfare is against those who keep the Commandments of God. There are Ten Commandments.

  • It is no mistake the horns rise out of ‘seven heads filled with blasphemous names’. There are seven powerful Spirits, or names, of Christ. (Rev.5:6)

This image shows Satan’s ‘intended’ warfare is now severely limited by the Blood of the Lamb (which covers us if we break the Commandments) and the Word of our Testimony (which is the opposite to blasphemy).

They overcame him by the blood of the lamb and the word of their testimony. (Rev.12:11)

It also explains how and why the confident love God showed the world in sending Christ to redeem us from Satan’s deceptions at Calvary is completely justified! Their plan worked!

Not only did Christ overcome Satan himself, he used the image of this beast to show us how we can now overcome Satan the same way he did, through the blood to overcome sin and through testimony to overcome blasphemy.

Who’s afraid of the big, bad beast? Not God! Not Christ!

And neither should any Christian be afraid!

Far from being frightening or ‘awesome’, this image of the beast proves God has outwitted and outplayed Satan! That’s what this image is about - Christ’s shattering victory OVER the beast!

Nowhere in Scripture does it say Satan has the power to order a ‘mark’ on anyone. What Scripture shows is that Satan, himself, has already been ‘marked’ for eternal destruction and will be thrown permanently (with his beasts) into the lake of fire.

So, when we ask, ‘Who has the power and authority to mark Satan?’ We find it is Christ alone who was given the authority from God to judge Satan and all who follow him. No one else has been given the power to ‘mark’.

Then the Lord called to the man dressed in linen who had the writing kit at his side and said to him, ‘Go...and put a mark on the foreheads of those who grieve...(over sin)’. (Eze.9:3-4)

In the above Scripture, Christ is the man whom God commands to do the marking, for this image cannot represent anyone else. The fine linen he is wearing is symbolic of righteousness, and the writing kit he is carrying is symbolic of the Lamb’s Book of Life.

That he is referred to as a man shows it is neither God nor his Spirit choosing who will be marked for salvation, but Christ.

When Christ marks, it is always for Salvation from death. Anyone not marked by him for salvation is automatically marked for death.

That is the 'mark' Satan and his beasts received. There is no salvation from death for Satan and his beasts. There is no salvation for those who worship them and follow their ways.

Further, this Scripture shows that when it comes to the actual destruction, it is not God, his Spirit or Christ who does the destroying, and neither is it an arbitrary act of Satan, for that role has always belonged to the obedient angels of God.

This rule doesn't change for in Revelation it is the obedient angels of God who bring all the plague, famine and sword judgments of God to the earth, and deal with Satan.

And I saw an angel coming down out of heaven. He seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil, or Satan, and bound him for a thousand years. He threw him into the Abyss and locked and sealed it over him. (Rev.20:1-2)

The final judgment of God for sin written in Revelation is not Satan's to play with. He is only an angel. He does not have the authority to judge. He does not have the authority to 'mark' people for judgment. That is Jesus' role! It will never be Satan's!

Scripture is consistent all the way through and confirms the eternal role of Christ as the one who judges in righteousness, only for salvation.

Even though he only marks for salvation, anyone not marked by him for salvation is automatically marked for death and dies at the hands of God’s angels.

This is an unchanging principle all through Scripture, both in the Old Testament and in the New.

Instead of fearing the 'mark' of the beast, maybe Christian's should be seeking to receive the 'mark' of God, which is given to us through Christ.

In Him, you also, when you had heard the word of truth, the Gospel of your salvation, and believed in Him, were marked with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit. (Eph.1:13)
Christ has anointed us by putting his seal on us and giving us his Spirit. (2Cor.1:21-22)
Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with which you were marked with a seal for the day of redemption. (Eph.4:30)
