What is the 'Mark of the Beast'?

The beast of Revelation didn't just appear out of nowhere. It was conjured by Satan for a specific reason. It is that reason which shows the purpose of the beast and what his ten horns and seven heads mean.

So, what is the purpose of the beast?

The first thing we are shown about the ten-horned beast of Revelation is that he is not a fixed 'location' on earth. He is walking and roaring. He has seven lion heads, a leopard body and four bear-claw feet. He is the 'roaring lion' Jesus warned us about.

Be sober-minded and alert. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. (1Pet.5:8)

The second thing we are shown is this beast is already defeated. Despite the fact his head was severely wounded at Calvary, he still arrogantly assumes he can take worship away from God and Christ. This insight into his nature shows he is running on pure pride, trying to gain subjects in a world Christ has ensured he will never rule again.

One of the heads of the beast seemed to have a fatal wound, but the fatal wound had been healed. (Rev.13:3)

The third thing we are shown is this description was given by God to glorify Christ. The beast was sent by Satan to do one thing only - make war against those who keep the Commandments of God and bear testimony to Jesus.

He (Satan) went off to make war on...those who keep the Commandments of God and bear testimony to Jesus. And the dragon stood on the shore of the sea. And I saw a beast rising... (Rev:12:17 - 13:1)
  • It is no mistake the beast conjured up by Satan has ten horns. There are Ten Commandments!

  • It is no mistake the beast has seven blasphemous heads. There are seven spirits, or names, of Christ. (See Rev.5:6)

When we know the beast exists only to tear down the Commandments of God and bring blasphemy to the name of Jesus, we can see why Jesus told us would overcome him by the blood of the lamb and the word of our testimony (Rev.12:11).

The blood of Christ covers the breaking of the Commandments, and giving testimony about Christ counteracts blasphemy. This defeated foe is not something we should worry about!

Then, what is his 'mark'?

There are two 'marks' in Scripture. One is the mark of God and the other is the mark of the beast. And the 'mark' of God is far more powerful than the mark of the beast, simply because:

  • God has already marked those who are his,

  • Satan can never remove the mark of God, and

  • Those who hold the mark of God cannot receive the mark of the beast.

Now isn’t that important information? That information should be proclaimed in every church!

The truth is; when believers receive the mark of God we are held within the grace, peace and protection of the mighty God of all gods, and there is absolutely no one with the power to snatch us out of his hand. That includes Satan!

What is the 'mark of God'?

Through the following Old Testament Scriptures, we see that honouring God by keeping his Commandments was regarded by him as the equivalent to being marked on the hand and on the forehead. It is an invisible spiritual mark given to those who revere and uphold God’s Commandments.

This observance will be a reminder, like something tied on your hand or on your forehead; it will remind you to continue to recite and study the Word. (Ex.13:9)
Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. (Deut.11:18-21)
Keep these words that I am commanding you today in your heart... bind them as a sign on your hand, fix them as an emblem on your forehead and write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates. (Deut.6:4-9)

From these Scriptures, we learn that the forehead and the hand symbolise what people believe and what they do about what they believe. So when we read that Satan will cause people to be marked on their forehead or hand, the mark being referred to will show, as God’s mark shows, what the person believes and what they do about their belief.

Back to the 'mark' of the beast...

The mark of the beast, like the mark of God, will be an invisible mark, on foreheads and hands, simply because it is a 'spiritual' mark which identifies what people believe and what they do about what they believe. But, the big question is, who hands out these 'marks'?

  • Does the beast hand out this mark? No!

  • Does Satan hand out this mark? No!

There is only one person in Scripture who has ever been given the authority by God to hand out 'marks' to anyone and he alone holds the keys to both life and death.

That person is Jesus!

In the following Scripture we see how marks are given out. God calls a 'man' to do marking. His linen clothes represent righteousness and his writing kit smybolises the Lamb's book of life. That he is a man shows that it is not God or the Spirit of God or an angel who does the marking, but a righteous 'man'.

Then the Lord called to the man dressed in linen who had the writing kit at his side and said to him, 'Go through Jerusalem, and put a mark on the foreheads of those who sigh and groan over all the abominations that are committed in it’. To the others he said in my hearing, ‘Pass through the city after him and kill... but touch no one who has the mark, and begin at my sanctuary'. (Eze.9:4-6)

PLEASE NOTICE: The absence of the mark of Salvation is the mark of death!

It's the same in Revelation!

In Revelation, when God sends out his holy angels to destroy the earth, he once again orders protection for those marked with the seal of the living God. That mark or seal is given by Christ, through the Holy Spirit. Again, we see that those who do not carry the mark of God's protection are automatically marked for death.

I saw another angel ascending from the rising of the sun, having the seal of the living God, and he called with a loud voice… ‘Do not damage the earth or the sea or the trees, until we have marked the servants of our God with a seal on their foreheads’. (Rev.7:2-3)

So what do we learn from this?

  • There are two marks - the mark of God and the mark of the beast.

  • All marks are handed out by the same person - the 'man' dressed in linen (Christ).

  • All marks are invisible.

  • Christ only marks for Salvation.

  • Those not protected by his mark automatically receive the mark of death.

Only Christ has the authority to hand out marks!

Nowhere in Scripture does it say Satan has the power to order a ‘mark’ on anyone. He can’t! He is only an angel; he has never had that authority or power. He does not rule - God does!

What Scripture shows is that Satan, himself, has been ‘marked’ for eternal destruction and will be thrown permanently into the lake of fire. His beasts, who also carry his mark of death, are thrown with him into the lake of fire.

  • Simply put, everyone who obeys the Commandments of God and testifies to Christ will be marked with the mark of God for salvation.

  • Everyone who rebels against the Commandments of God and blasphemes Christ will be marked with the mark of Satan and his beasts for death.

The New Testament 'mark of God' for salvation is also invisible!

In Him, you also, when you had heard the word of Truth, the Gospel of your salvation, and believed in Him, were marked with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit. (Eph1:13)
Christ has annointed us by putting his seal on us and giving us his Spirit...(2Cor.1:21-22)
Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with which you were marked with a seal for the day of redemption. (Eph.4:30)

Such a simple message!

This very simple message has been made complicated by false and fear-filled 'end-time' teachers who have no understanding of the Gospel.

In trying to promote the ridiculous concept that our eternal destination can be decided by something other than sin they show total ignorance of the power of the death and resurrection of our great King of Kings.

Flee from the fear-filled, Satan-glorifying 'end-time' mythology. It is all lies!

Christ is about love, not fear, and those love him will glorify him alone. He is the truth!
